If you’ve ever lost weight only to put it all back on again, you’re not alone.
In fact, it’s one of the biggest frustrations I hear from people who come to me for coaching.
They’ve tried slimming clubs, restrictive diets, meal replacement shakes, detoxes, calorie-cutting challenges and endless cardio sessions. They may have lost weight initially, but eventually life got in the way and the weight came back.
I know exactly how that feels because I have been there myself.
Before becoming a personal trainer and weight loss coach in Ashford, I was the person struggling with my own weight.
Over the years, I lost more than 11 stone and completely transformed my health, fitness and confidence.
The biggest surprise?
I didn’t do it by giving up the foods I love.
I didn’t do it through endless hours of cardio.
And I certainly didn’t do it by living a perfect lifestyle.
Instead, I focused on building sustainable habits that I could maintain for life.
That same approach is now what I use to help clients throughout Ashford and beyond achieve long-term weight loss results.
Why Most People Regain Weight After Losing It
One of the biggest problems with traditional dieting is that it often focuses entirely on short-term results.
People are told to:
Cut out carbohydrates
Avoid social occasions
Eliminate favourite foods
Exercise excessively
Follow strict meal plans
The problem is that most people cannot realistically maintain those habits forever.
Eventually they return to normal eating patterns and the weight comes back.
The goal should never be to find the fastest way to lose weight.
The goal should be to find a way of eating and living that allows you to lose weight while still enjoying your life.
That is the difference between temporary weight loss and lasting weight loss.
My Weight Loss Journey
At my heaviest, I knew something needed to change.
Like many people, I started with the belief that I needed to completely overhaul my life overnight.
I thought I needed to eat perfectly.
I thought I needed to train every day.
I thought I had to suffer through the process.
What I eventually learned was that sustainable weight loss is far simpler than most people realise.
The key wasn’t perfection.
The key was consistency.
Instead of focusing on dramatic changes, I focused on improving my daily habits.
Small actions repeated consistently over time created the biggest transformation.
That approach allowed me to lose over 11 stone while still enjoying meals out, social events and the foods I genuinely enjoyed eating.
The Biggest Lesson I Learned About Weight Loss
The biggest lesson I learned is that successful weight loss is not about motivation.
Motivation comes and goes.
Everyone feels motivated on Monday.
Very few people feel motivated on a wet Wednesday evening after a stressful day at work.
The people who achieve lasting results build systems that work even when motivation disappears.
Examples include:
Planning meals ahead of time
Keeping active on busy weeks
Prioritising protein intake
Maintaining realistic calorie targets
Training consistently rather than excessively
Having a strategy for weekends and holidays
These habits may not seem exciting, but they are what produce lasting results.
You Do Not Need to Give Up Your Favourite Foods
One of the biggest myths in the fitness industry is that weight loss requires restriction.
Many people believe they must avoid:
Chocolate
Takeaways
Restaurant meals
Alcohol
Family celebrations
In reality, sustainable weight loss should fit around your life.
I regularly help clients lose weight while still enjoying meals out, date nights, holidays and social events.
The secret is learning how to manage your overall calorie intake and lifestyle rather than trying to eliminate everything enjoyable.
When people realise they can still enjoy life while making progress, everything becomes easier to maintain.
Why Sustainable Weight Loss Works Better
Crash diets often deliver quick results.
Unfortunately, they also create quick rebounds.
Sustainable weight loss focuses on:
Building Better Habits
Small changes maintained consistently.
Creating Realistic Expectations
Understanding that progress is rarely perfect.
Improving Lifestyle Behaviours
Developing routines that fit around work, family and social commitments.
Keeping Results Long-Term
Avoiding the cycle of losing and regaining weight repeatedly.
The objective is not simply to lose weight.
The objective is to keep it off.
