Do You Need Cardio to Lose Weight? A Personal Trainer Explains

If you're trying to lose weight, you might think you need to spend hours running, cycling or sweating on a treadmill.
But do you actually need cardio to lose weight?
The short answer is no.
Cardio can certainly help with weight loss, but it isn't essential. What matters most is creating a consistent calorie deficit while building habits you can maintain.
Why Cardio Isn't the Only Answer
One of the biggest mistakes I see people make is treating exercise purely as a way to burn calories.
They'll force themselves through cardio sessions they don't enjoy, eat as little as possible and wonder why they eventually struggle to keep going.
Having lost over 11 stone myself, I understand how easy it is to become obsessed with doing more to get results faster.
But sustainable weight loss isn't about making everything as difficult as possible.
It's about finding an approach that works.
Should You Prioritise Strength Training?
For many people trying to lose body fat, I recommend including resistance training.
Why?
Because the goal shouldn't simply be to weigh less.
Ideally, you want to lose body fat while maintaining as much muscle as possible.
Strength training helps you preserve muscle during weight loss, improve your strength and change how your body looks and feels.
And you don't need to train six days a week to benefit.
Even two or three structured sessions can be a great starting point.
Don't Underestimate Walking
You don't necessarily need intense cardio sessions to increase your daily activity.
Walking is one of the simplest ways to support weight loss.
It's accessible, doesn't require expensive equipment and is often much easier to fit around work, family commitments and everyday life.
You don't need to suddenly achieve 10,000 steps every day either.
Start by increasing your activity from wherever you are now.
What Actually Works for Long-Term Weight Loss?
In my experience coaching hundreds of people, the most effective approach isn't necessarily the one that burns the most calories during a workout.
It's the one you can consistently follow.
That means combining sensible nutrition, regular movement and appropriate strength training in a way that suits your lifestyle.
You don't need to earn your food through exercise, and you certainly don't need to spend your life doing workouts you hate.
